----------------------------
frac·tal (frâk´tël) n. A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever
smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be
represented by classical geometry. Fractals are used especially in
computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature.

- Mailing lists Or these EMail Discussion Lists: FRACTAL-ART, The Fractal Art Discussion List Subscribe: fractal-art-subscribe@lists.fractalus.com Posts: fractal-art@lists.fractalus.com Description: This mailing list is open to all individuals/organizations interested in all aspects of Fractal Art. This would include fractal and digital artists, fractal software developers, gallery owners, museum curators, art marketers and brokers, printers, art collectors, and simply anybody who just plain likes to look at fractal images. PHILOFRACTAL, The Fractal Philosophy Discussion List Subscribe: philofractal-subscribe@lists.fractalus.com Unsubscribe: philofractal-unsubscribe@lists.fractalus.com Posts: philofractal@lists.fractalus.com Description: This mailing list is for the discussion of fractal philosophy. This includes science and religion, at least in their non-dogmatic aspects, and the way they relate to fractals. This list will have broader limits than the three current fractal lists. FRACTINT, The Fractals and Fractint Discussion List Subscribe: majordomo@xmission.com (body of your email message: subscribe fractint) Posts: Fractint@xmission.com Description: This mailing list is for the discussion of fractals, fractal art, fractal algorithms, fractal software, and fractal programming. Specific discussion related to the freeware MS-DOS program Fractint and it's ports to other platforms is welcome, but discussion need not be Fractint related. Technical discussion is welcome, but so are beginner's questions, so don't be shy. This is a good place to share Fractint tips, tricks, and techniques, or to wax poetic about other fractal software.

- http://virtualexp.net/ Java2 Fractal Applets A number of these Java2 applets play with fractals. We liked some, but found the 3-D world efforts lacking in realism and substance. Some of these applets might serve as remarkably hypnotic screensavers, were it not for the static copyright notices prominently emblazoned at the bottom of the programs.

- Good simple explanation of Fractals
- The Natural Geometry of Nature - A nicely done explanation complete with excellent Java applets !
- Fractals in Nature If you've ever wondered how such intricate patterns emerge in a snowflake, you need to see the Dance of Chance. The gallery, a collaboration between the Center for Polymer Studies and the Boston Museum of Science, looks at the emergence of patterns in nature from physical and biological processes. Fractal patterns in nature develop from processes as small as the growth of bacteria on agar or as large as the erosion patterns of large rivers, but their astounding delicacy and similarity is undeniable. Hands-on experiments include studying the Lichtenberg patterns that form when air is forced into a gooey fluid (which you can do in person at the museum, but view online) and observing the feeding trails of termites in sand. One of the coolest things is the description of how electrocardiogram data is used to produce music that you can play in MIDI format at the Web site. That project grew out of a sound (yeah, a pun) cardiology study on looking at such data to determine health.

- http://flam3.com/index.cgi?&menu=about Fractal Flames are algorithmically generated images and animations. The software was written in 1992 and released as open source, aka free software. It has been incorporated into many graphics programs and ported to most operating systems. The shape of each image is specified by a string of numbers - a genetic code of sorts.

Fractal datas are created locally and distributed to any fractal computers which may be hosted on workstations, Java enabled web-browser through applets, and even JavaCard (!). DJFractal is highly customizable from schedulers to fractal computers. Hence, DJFractal can be used locally whith a fast fractal computer which uses double precision internally or can be used in a distributed environment using several fractal computers available on the network which use arbitrary precision for the computation extending the limitation of the double precision (E-16) to almost infinity (in fact to the sum of the available memory on each host used).
