Motivating the Explorers - Carrots and Sticks

Some ideas on how to motivate the Explorers.

Explorer's Post 631 Carrots and Sticks Ideas for 2004-2005

Carrots

  1. The Spacestore.com: http://www.thespacestore.com/lanalode.html
    http://www.thespacestore.com/teenagers.html http://www.thespacestore.com/under10.html
  2. Youngstown NEW Urban Teachers recommended that we do interest survey and see what turns their crank. Tailor the program to connect to that interest.
  3. Come up with some kind of giveaway/contest that takes place at 6 PM as an incentive to be on time!
  4. Create a "Refrigerator Door" display of work
    • Parents like to put their kids works of art,etc... on their refrigerator door. Maybe we could do something like this for the Explorers. We could get some poster board ( since we can't leave the stuff hanging up in the Training Rooms ), maybe make it look like refrigerator door just for grins and put color print outs of the Explorers work on it. For example, since we are strongly considering a PaintShop Pro tutorial, we could put their artisitic creations on the door. Maybe put photos up there. It might also serve as a place for kids to gather around before each meeting and socialize with others instead of immediately clustering into their cliques.
  5. Stickers ( meatballs ? )
    • Put on their notebooks if:
      • They show up with their notebook and basically do the activities they are supposed to be doing.
      • Or they do something special like do a volunteer activity or organize an event
    • The person(s) with the most stickers at the end of the year year wins something
    • Encourage parent participation

Sticks

  1. The Ten Computer Commandments
  2. Acceptable use policies from Mary
