Tips on What to Do With Your Old Computer

When you have an old or broken computer, what do you do? Hopefully, this page will give you information that will help the environment.

Computer Equipment

April is Computer Recycling Month in Cuyahoga County. See http://www.cuyahogaswd.org/residents/comprec.asp
for more information. Acceptable home computer equipment includes CPUs, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, terminals, modems, cables, software, cell phones & accessories and printer cartridges.

Many computer companies now accept old computers when you buy a new one. See http://www.computertakeback.com/.

Cardboard

Carastar RFG, Cleveland Recycling Plant
3400 Vega Avenue
Cleveland, Ohio 44113
Telephone: 216/961-5060

They accept all kinds of cardboard. Be sure to call ahead to make sure you understand where to drop it off.

Paper

The Paper Retriever Program is sponsored by Abitibi Consolidated and has many, many drop off locations in the area. See
http://www.cuyahogaswd.org/residents/retriever.htm
for more information. These recycling bins accept  magazines, catalogs, junk mail, newspapers, and other household paper (but no phone books or cardboard).

Packing Material

The UPS Stores in the area accept packing material that they can reuse. They definitely take the styrofoam peanuts.

Donate Computers

TechSoup.org maintains a database of organizations that will take your donated computer. It’s even searchable by zip code to help you find an organization in your area.
